SHE REALLY WANT A BABY BOY …
It was a beautiful Saturday morning, the Sun was out early –though mild; the cool breeze swept gently across town. Typically, on a day like this, I would just prefer to stay in bed, reading some interesting novel. But I had a matter at hand. This fateful day, I would go to the diagnostic center to do a pregnancy scan.
Yes, I had been feeling that way for sometime –you know: morning sickness, nausea, cravings, generally tired, unable to get out of bed in the morning. Yes, and I suspect the usual. I am not a novice in things like this ; not to understand my body. Three previous pregnancies, three boys; and one would assume that at this point, we ought to hang our boots. But it had happened! Another pregnancy despite the precautions.
I arrived the center in good time, made payment at the counter, walked straight to the hall and made myself comfortable. There was a lady there, seated as well. I presume she came for the same reason. I beamed a smile, but she was too casual in her response. I couldn’t blame her –pregnancy can be a lot of trouble.
In a moment, someone emerged from the scanning room and handed her a file. Guess she’d had her diagnostic done. So I went in to the main room with the attendant. I stretched myself on the narrow bed, my blouse lifted to expose my tummy. And soon the sonographer began work while I watched through the monitor.
With every move of the transducer, I wondered to myself: what sex will it be? Male? Female? Which do I prefer? After this one, I’ll be extremely careful. Never planned to have this number of kids, but I love children notwithstanding. Looking at the screen, I saw my baby’s movement, his form, the tender heartbeat. Yes love, you may not have been expected, but you are loved all thesame.
Then the voice of the sonographer cut my thoughts. ”How many kids have you had previously?’ ‘Three.’ ‘Sex?’ ‘All male.’ ‘Hmmm. An irony of life.’ The young man made me understand that the lady I had met in the hall came to have her scan done. Like me, she’d had three kids, and is expecting the fourth. All girls… SHE REALLY WANT A BABY BOY.
The news of the pregnancy being girl, left her miserable. She’d hoped it would be a boy.
Good gracious! Do such things still happen in our days? What is that unique thing about having male or female children? Is the birthing of one easier than the birthing of the other? Or, is this just a case of cultural bias; maybe religious sentiment? Should such practices be allowed to go on in a modern society as we have today?
I cast my mind back to the facial expression of the woman I met in the hall. That depressive look; that feeling of deep sadness. Should this be the mood of a pregnant woman; someone carrying a new life about to be born? Now, I understand why she responded to me the way she did. Hmmm, SHE REALLY WANT A BABY BOY.
A woman has more dignity than just making babies –male or female. The demand of pregnancy and childbirth are enormous, and every woman should be encouraged through the process.
I know some well meaning families that have only female children: some have one, others two, maybe three. What matters is the ability to take care of these children, and the happiness in the family.
Some women have died in the cause of child bearing. Some died along with their new born babies. To the family where such ugly incidence happened, they would rather both mother and child lives to see the day. Given this scenario then, what manner of man would give his wife condition that unless she gives birth to a male child, she has no place in his home. To such a man, I would gladly leave with my girls –yes, my children.
SHE REALLY WANT A BABY BOY : There’s a woman out there that have all girls and desperately need a baby boy… don’t loose hope for there’s still a God in heaven that answers prayers.
